Why I decided to open an indie bookstore (and why here, in Quebec)
Some dreams grow quietly, slowly — until one day, they simply become obvious.
Opening my own bookstore is one of those dreams.
For the longest time, it was just a “maybe one day” tucked away in a corner of my mind.
But as I kept reading, discovering independent authors, and connecting with other book lovers, that dream started to take shape.
And today, Merveilles & Chuchotements was born.
Not yet between four walls, but alive all the same — as an online bookstore, imagined as a little literary refuge.
A space I want to feel warm, human, and a little bit magical — just like the books that shaped me. ✨
🌿 Where It All Began
Books have always been my safe haven.
Reading, for me, means recentring myself, escaping for a while, understanding the world — and sometimes, quietly stepping away from it.
It’s what led me to study literature. But after graduating, I somehow lost that spark.
Life got busy. I read less. And then one day, without even realizing it, I started reading again — and it felt like coming home.
My father, an entrepreneur for over twenty years, has always inspired me. He taught me the value of independence and freedom. Watching him carve his own path made me realize that I, too, could build something personal — something that truly reflected who I am. That’s what led me to study Business Management — to learn how to turn passion into something real.
And somewhere along that journey, the idea appeared:
to create a space where my love for books could meet my love for human connection.
A place where readers could feel seen, understood, and inspired.
💫 Why an Independent Bookstore
Because an independent bookstore is more than just a business.
It’s a philosophy — a commitment to passion, authenticity, and proximity.
It’s about choosing people first.
Merveilles & Chuchotements is a bookstore centered around stories that make us feel: romance, fantasy, dystopia, thrillers, mysteries.
But it’s also a space that celebrates independent authors — powerful, genuine voices that deserve to be heard and cherished.
I want every reader who visits the website to feel the same warmth as if they were stepping into a small neighborhood bookstore.
Because at its core, reading is — and will always be — about sharing.
🍁 Why Québec
Because this is where I grew up.
It’s where I fell in love with books, and where I now want to give back — in my own small way — to the vibrant literary world here in Québec.
Even if Merveilles & Chuchotements exists online for now, its roots are deeply Québécois.
This is where it all begins — and who knows?
Maybe one day, it’ll take shape between real walls, surrounded by books, coffee, and soft light.
🌸 In a Few Words
Opening an independent bookstore is more than a business project.
It’s a love letter — to reading, to creative freedom, and to the beauty of stories told from the heart.
Merveilles & Chuchotements is still at the very beginning of its journey.
But if this project can inspire even one person to fall back in love with books,
then I’ll know this dream was worth having. 🌿
